The sun soaked desert and red Rocks of the South Western deserts was home to the 2011 Fresh Water Nationals. As the Colorado River leaves the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it flows south west through southern Utah. Just as it enters Page Arizona a dam holds back a reservoir called Lake Powell. Lake Powell has 1800 miles of shore line, more than the west coast of the USA. It was one of the most unique and breath taking sites I have ever dove. The mountainous red rock, balancing boulders mixed in beautiful beaches and great weather make it a massive water park playground. For visibility we had 2-20 ft., 70 degree water and outside weather that was comfortable in the 70-80s. In Utah game fish may be taken from many of the lakes. Here in Powell Carp, stripers, wipers, white bass, black bass, walleye, cat fish and others were all available. For divers that ventures down to 50-60' where the cool thermocline was they found many more catfish and walleye. The meet ran from sun rise until 3:00, 8 hours of solid diving, with a weigh in and banquet afterwards. The meet was boat based with 2 man teams. There were 20+ great sponsors that really stepped up to make this a meet successful-- thank you to all of them. Teams came in from Hawaii to Tenn. and we all had a fun safe weekend of diving. Top Individual went to Dennis Haussler again and his team top first as well with Mike Ban a local Co. boy with a fresh water championship from 2009. 2nd place team was Christian Baker and Matt Deichsel both from Co. and the 3rd place team were 2 top divers from Hawaii, who took a 2nd last year at Greers Ferry Ak, Calvin Lai and Hanalei Adric. While mostly rough fish - carp - were taken and recycled in the local compost station, many game fish were also taken and great meals were made from all these fish. For next year’s Fresh Water Nationals and to support fresh water spearfishing Nationwide continue to check out our site.
Until next Nationals
